Real preparation. Real workmanship. From Samurai Concrete Constructions.
The Samurai Difference
What Makes Concrete Last?
What's under your concrete matters just as much as what you see on top.
A quality concrete project starts long before the concrete truck arrives. The visible finish matters, but so does everything underneath it. Proper excavation, a prepared and compacted base, correctly positioned reinforcement, movement allowance, drainage and careful placement all contribute to how concrete performs over time. At Samurai Concrete Constructions, we put just as much attention into what you won't see once the job is finished as what you will.
Concrete Done Properly.
Samurai Concrete Constructions is a family-run concrete contractor based in Mount Waverley, servicing Melbourne's eastern, south-eastern, inner-eastern and bayside suburbs.
Our engineering and construction background influences how we approach preparation, levels, reinforcement, drainage and the complete concrete project. We look at the whole job — not just the surface.
Our Approach
What Proper Preparation Looks Like
The layers beneath your concrete are what determine how it performs over time.
Prepared Subgrade
Proper excavation and preparation of the existing ground. Unsuitable, soft or unstable material is addressed before the concrete base is prepared. Enough material needs to be removed to allow for the required base preparation, concrete thickness and finished levels.
Compacted Crushed Rock
Where appropriate, a minimum 50mm of properly wet-compacted crushed rock forms a stable base beneath the concrete. Depth and preparation may be adjusted according to the project, site conditions, loading, plans or engineering requirements. Crushed rock should be properly placed and wet compacted — not concrete simply poured over unsuitable or loose material.
Moisture Membrane Where Appropriate
A polyethylene membrane may be used where appropriate for the particular project and specification. Correct installation matters — the membrane needs to be properly lapped, sealed at penetrations and kept intact during the pour. Not every external concrete project requires the same moisture barrier specification.
Reinforcement
Reinforcement is supported on appropriate bar chairs and positioned correctly within the concrete rather than being left sitting on the ground. Where applicable this can also include dowels into existing concrete, reinforcement overlaps, re-entrant bars at internal corners and engineering-specific reinforcement. Reinforcement requirements vary according to project type, application, loading, plans and engineering requirements.
Concrete & Finish
The finished concrete may include plain concrete, coloured concrete, exposed aggregate, honed concrete, pavilion finish or other suitable architectural and decorative finishes. Concrete selection, placement, compaction and finishing all contribute to the outcome. The finish is important — but it is only one part of the entire system.
Workmanship
The Details That Matter
Preparation and concrete works are completed to suit the project, supplied plans, engineering and relevant Australian requirements where applicable.
Excavation & Levels
Enough material needs to be removed to allow for the required base preparation, concrete thickness and finished levels.
Base Preparation
Crushed rock should be properly placed and wet compacted rather than concrete simply being poured over unsuitable or loose material.
Reinforcement
Reinforcement needs to be correctly supported and positioned within the concrete so it can perform as intended.
Dowels & Connections
Where appropriate, dowels can be used when connecting new concrete with existing concrete.
Re-entrant Corners
Additional reinforcement can be used at vulnerable internal corners where appropriate to help manage concentrated stresses.
Movement & Isolation
Ableflex or suitable isolation material may be used where appropriate between concrete and adjoining structures or hard surfaces.
Drainage & Falls
Levels and falls are planned around the site so water is appropriately directed away from structures and unwanted ponding is reduced.
Control Joints
Concrete naturally shrinks and moves. Properly planned control joints help manage where movement occurs.
Concrete Placement
Concrete selection, placement, compaction and finishing all contribute to the outcome.
Curing
Concrete continues developing strength after finishing. Appropriate curing is an important part of the process.
Sealing
Where appropriate for the finish, sealing can assist with protection and maintenance — particularly for exposed aggregate, coloured and decorative concrete.
Our Philosophy
Why We Pay Attention to the Details
Our engineering and construction background has taught us to look at the whole project, not just the surface.
Before concrete is poured, we consider access, excavation, levels, surrounding structures, reinforcement, drainage, movement and how the finished area will actually be used.
Not every project needs the same solution. What matters is understanding what that particular project requires and preparing it properly.
That's what we mean by Concrete Done Properly.
